Meet the Maker - Paper Paintings by Nicola Coady
In April 2024, we were delighted to welcome new artist Nicola Coady to the Tudor Artisan Hub Family - the response to Nicola's work has been fantastic!
Take a peep at Nicola's very tidy studio!!
Let's hear from Nicola about her work:
"I do collage art inspired by my local surroundings including holidays all over Ireland. I am a biologist originally from Canada, but I now live in Portlaw, County Waterford. This is the room where it all happens, except when it happens in the kitchen or in front of the TV.
I use mainly upcycled materials including old newspapers, maps, cardboard, packaging, wallpaper samples and wrappers. Normally I use a paste made from flour and water to put everything together but, occasionally when working with non-paper wrappers I might use a store-bought paste just to make sure everything stays together.
We listen to music as I paint, and Mila and I often do a little bit of dancing. Mila is clearly NOT dancing in this photo – probably because she is alarmed at how neat and tidy the art room is. Linda said not to tidy before I took photos, but I just couldn’t help it (what if my Mom saw this post and there were wrappers and newspapers everywhere?).
This is the only room in the house where I hang my own art. Each year I do a “family painting”. It is usually of the dogs (sadly Scruffy has passed away) but sometimes they include other family members like my husband David. I’ll share a few of my favourites. “Beast from the East” shows the first time Scruffy and Mila encountered snow. We had a giant beach ball and Mila and I played and played and played. Scruffy was unimpressed until we went on a walk, and he was allowed to wander down the middle of the road leash free. Because these paintings are not for sale, I will sometimes do versions of famous paintings so instead of “Dog Show Poster” by Ludwig Hohlwein I have “Mila” with a few of her many, many nicknames. Instead of “Le Chat Noir” by Theophile Steinlen I have “Scruffy the Rat Killer” (his record was 17 rats in one day in South Africa).
I sell my work in galleries throughout Ireland, and I have had solo exhibitions in South Africa, Canada, Finland and locally in Tramore and Waterford. In 2020 “Puffins of Skellig Michael” was an award winner at the National Collage Society’s Annual Small Format Exhibition. My next solo exhibition will be at the Coastguard Cultural Centre July 2025 but watch this space as I am hoping to do several pop-up shows with the Hub before then." - Nicola Coady
