Tudor Artisan Hub Makers

We welcomed Glass by Ger to the Tudor Artisan Hub Arts Collective October 2023. Meet the Maker: Geraldine Gleeson.

Ger is a glass artist based in Fethard in Tipperary. She makes fused glass which is joining together pieces of glass at high temperatures in a kiln. Recently retired, Ger is letting her creative side loose. Her glass art is inspired by her love of nature, colour and especially flowers. Flowers are a constant theme in her work.

“I have always been a maker, even as an only child I would have painted, knit, sewed.”

She studied Science at UCC in the early 80’s and worked in the pharmaceutical industry. She went on to teach Chemistry in Cashel Community School in the 90’s. She worked with her husband in their business in Cashel until she retired in 2021.

“I have always loved coloured glass but never thought it was something I could work with. I attended a stained-glass workshop run by Cashel Arts Festival in 2012 and was hooked. My husband bought me the basic tools needed that Christmas and I was off!

In 2019 I bought my first kiln. I have recently purchased equipment for lampworking. This is a type of glasswork which uses a torch to melt and shape glass.

More than anything I love learning. The scientist in me loves figuring it all out. The creative in me loves opening the kiln and seeing the result. It’s like Christmas. There is nothing better than the shaft of light passing through the vibrant colours of the glass. I love nothing more than playing with the glass.”

Ger is mostly self-taught. She has done online courses with Artists in USA and UK as well as attended short courses with various artists around Ireland.

“Carrick photographer Noreen Duggan introduced me to Linda and “The Hub “in October 2023. Up to this my glass was mainly a home-based hobby with the occasional craft fair. Linda has been a wonderful mentor; I really enjoy having someone else to bounce my ideas off. Even if sometimes that takes me outside my comfort zone.

I love working with glass and it is wonderful when other people like what I make. I would like to thank all “The Hub” patrons who have supported me and I hope they continue to enjoy my work.”
