Hello there! I’m Joyce Murphy, a passionate children’s author from Carrick-on-Suir. My inspiration lies with a love for storytelling, the environment and all things fun and imaginative. With my flaming red hair, much like the heroine in my book, “The Girl with the Flaming Red Hair,” I bring a burst of energy and creativity to every story I write.
Interacting with young readers is one of the greatest joys of my life. Seeing their eyes light up with wonder and excitement when they dive into my books fills my heart with happiness. I aim to create a warm, welcoming space for children and parents, where stories are not just read but lived and experienced.
Living by the sea in Tramore, the soothing sounds of the waves and the salty breeze inspire my books. My cosy seaside home is where I weave fun adventures that not only entertain but also educate young minds. I believe in the importance of stories to teach children important values that ignite their curiosity for the world around them.
To this end I ’m deeply committed to creating books such as “The Bee and the Dandelion,” that promote education in fun and engaging ways while fostering a strong love and respect for the planet.
Inspired by the magical adventures I adored as a child, I wrote the books “Kong and the Magic Jungle,” and “Kong and the Hungry Crocodile,” which tells the story of three children living in the jungle where they befriend a talking parrot and a Magic Gorilla.

A wonderful Therapeutic Story Book for children.
Milo and Friends Forest Adventures - Dragons have feelings too!
Written by local author Ann Keating O'Neill. Price: €10
Therapeutic stories are healing stories and the metaphor which Ann used in this therapeutic story is ‘fire’, to represent the feeling of anger/heat which we all feel deep in our bellies, and sometimes struggle to control.
Knowing that it is ok to feel the feelings we have, that we can always try to change those not so nice feelings. Doing something fun can help, talking can too, understanding too that sometimes it is not so easy to change our feelings, that is ok too.
There is a Mindful Breathing Exercise at the end of the story that can be done at any time that a child needs to regulate their breathing.
There are also two lovely colouring pages at the back of the book, in fact the whole inside of the book can be coloured/photocopied, a way for a child to further connect with their favourite characters in the story.
Ann spent 18 years working as an early year's teacher and is now pursuing her dream of working therapeutically with children. Ann has recently completed her training as a Therapeutic Play Practitioner and her next step is diploma in Play Therapy. Ann personally loves dragons and hopes that this story will help children to understand their feelings through symbolism and metaphor.
The book is beautifully illustrated by Caoilfhinn Reddy, a student in media, NUI Maynooth.

About Rachel and the Book...
Rachel was inspired to write The Greedy Crocodile when she was trying to think of ways to stop her twin girls pulling unripe tomatoes off plants growing in their greenhouse. She started developing the story when she tucked the girls into bed at night and told them a story where they were the main characters alongside a tomato-picking crocodile.
She says: “I am inspired by topics that I can relate directly to in my own environment. When a story has a tangible link to something in your environment, it frees up your imagination. I wanted to create a book that held the children’s attention and inspired the imagination of young children while also providing some gentle learning along the way.”
Rachel has a passion for creating books for young children.
She says: “Less is more in the picture book world. I prefer books that leave space for both adults and children to engage with the story and perhaps add some extra legs of their own to it.”
Rachel says: “Whether you try to grow a single chilli plant on your bedroom windowsill or jump in and volunteer with your local community garden, the more people get dirt under their fingernails, the better.
Rachel says: “Growing your own food is such a great topic for children to learn about and I have rather sneakily wound the story around the life-cycle of the tomato plant. This unlucky crocodile gets a bad case of hay fever from the yellow flowers of the tomato plants.”
An illustrated recipe for tomato soup is at the end of the book, which is a lovely activity for children to do in the kitchen with their parents or carers and also reinforces the idea that our food goes on a long and interesting journey before it reaches our plates and bowls for us to enjoy.
